EXETER RAILWAY ACCIDENT.
TRIAL OF THE DRIVER
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT,
(Received April 28, 11.50 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 28, The trial of Peter Irwin, driver of the train at the Exeter smash, on the charge of felonously slaying Bray, one of the victims, has .commenced. The accused exhausted his right to challenge. The case hinges on the signals, and counsel intimated that the defence would be that the distant signal showed green, and that the fog was too thick for the driver to 6ee the red light at the home signal. A night officer gave evidence that there was no fog, but it was very misty. _ He could see the back lights, indicating; both signals at danger. If there were a. green signal, no back light would show. Other witnesses testified that there had been a dense fog. The hearing was adjourned.
