HEAVY FINES

PALMERSTON N., April 28. At the Police Court yesterday, tw& bookmakers, Jack Moughan an<i Thomas Torpey, were charged" with Bet--ting on licensed premises. It appears that Inspector, "Wilson' (Wanganui) detailed Constables Faritworth (Wangar.ui) and Brown (New Plymouth) to try and get bets' with the accused, with successful results. Farnworth sorted out the winners, and made bets with both accused, with successful results in some instances, . the illegal, transactions taking place in two local hotels. Moughan denied on oath any recollection of having laid the odds with Constable Farnworth, but .admitted having been previously convicted on a similar charge. Moughan, as a second offender, was fined £50 and costs, while Torpey, a first offender, was fined £26 and costs.
