A TOTALISATOR CASE. St TELEGRAPH —PEESB ASSOCIATION

NELSON, MarcH 14. A case, said to be the first of its kind in New Zealand, was heard to-day. H. D. James, totalisator proprietor, vas charged with registering money on the tatalisatox after the time notified foe the closing of the race. The Magistrate, Mr Evans, held that there was »o definition of the meaning of "noti"fiea," and nothing in the Act obliging 4tubs to notify the time of starting; iwt he also held that any notification hj the club to the public or persons liable to penalty, was sufficient. Defendant was fined 20s, but exonerated from any moral turpitude.

BURGLARY

WANGANUI, March 15. The premises of Messrs Power and McTubbs, carrying on business as ironanongers in the Avenue, were broken into during Friday night, and the sum of £15 taken from the safe, everything except cheques being stolen.
