The Rev. ATThomosn, Presbyterian minister at- Petone, is reported to be seriously ill in Wellington.
Mr F. A. Bremer, the well-known South Taranaki stock breeder, is lying seriously ill in New Plymouth (says the News).
His Excellency the Governor, Earl Liverpool, with Lady, Liverpool, and the usual aides-de-camp, will arrive in New Plymouth on March 17, by mail train, leaving on March 19.
A Christchurch message states that Earl Grey arrived there last, night and was welcomed by the Deputy-Mayor and others. He will remain there till Saturday. By request, no public functions are being held. ■ _
The death occurred at Greytown on Tuesday morning of Mr F. W. King, a settler of over 40 years' standing. The deceased, who was 71 years of age, was greatly respected in the district. A widow and family of six children are left. The children are Messrs R. J. King (of Masterton, the well-known " rifle-shot), F. King (Hastings), H. King (New Plymouth), and Mesdames W. Baker (Wellington), C. Wiggins (Greytown), and D. Baker (Feilding) .
On the eve of their departure on a holiday visit to the Old Country, the Mayor of Stratford, at a good-bye gathering in the Borough Chambers, on Tuesday evening, presented Mr T. C Fookes with a pair of field glasses and Mr Fookes with a gold bangle. Complimentary speeches were made by the Mayor and others. Mr Fookes, in replying, gave some very interesting recollections of his early days in Stratford, now approaching a quartercentury past, when the pedestrian dodged mud-holes instead of motors, and the simple life was led with butter at 4§d a pound. /
