TOKAORA.
(Fbom Oma Own CJobbespondbnt*) Early on Wednesday morinng some dogs worried a local settler's sheep, damages estimated at about £60 being done. The miscreants were traced in a westerly direction after the mischiof was accomph'shed. SCHOOL PICNICS. The annual break-up for Christmas holidays took place on Thursday, 18th inst. The event was celebrated by a very successful and enjoyable picnic, in which a large number joined outside the immediate school attendance, the parents and adult visitors making quite a presentable muster. These Tokaora gatherings are widely known for the good fellowship prevailing, and the settlers vied with one another to make the event what it was—p. thorough success. The sun came out and we were blessed with one—the only one —fine day there has been for many weeks. The grounds committee saw to the racing track and cricket pitch. Mr 9. S. Wright very thoughtfully brought a waggon load of seating acJ commodatiolT, together with tarpaulins, I horse and cow covers to spread on the damp ground, so that the children and visitors would not feel the effects of the moist earth. The treat of the day was the pillow fights with the competitors astride a greased pole. ,or, rather, a new-felled sapling with the bark peeled off just before the game started. The bun and pop race, too, caused, roars of laughter. Afternoon tea was served out and the chairman distributed the cash and book prizes; every child attending school was awarded either a prize or a present. Cheers were called for the teacher, the chairman, the ladies who provided refreshments, and Mr Hawken ?for the free use of his paddock alongside the school grounds. These were, lustily responded to. Two ladies liberally supplied condiments dear to youngsters' nearts, and no child left without a j souvenir. The parents cordially ex-i pressed their thanks to the motorlorry and cc^h drivers for their kindness in giving the little ones free rides to and from isccool.
