TE ROTI

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Owing to the abnormally bad weather experienced lately, the farmers are muling their miiK supply decreasing uaiiy,• ana tne>, buoyant uopes expressed iji vie spring for a recora season liave iiot beeu maintained.

The bee-keepers of the district are finding it a very trying time, especially as the strike stopped supplies of sugar, and as the weather prevented the bees getting out to get food, the, colonies tnat should be at this time "boiling over" with bees, are only of moderate strength, and unless we get a spell of fine settled weather, the honey crop will be small. The school children "broke up" today for their summer holidays, and they made it an occasion for presenting the teacher, Miss Hansen, with a sil-ver-mounted oak inkstand and illuminated calendar. The presentation was made by Master Ron. Cleaver. The prizes were then given {gifts from the teacher), the recipients being-4-Good conduct (silver medal), Wilhelmina Morrison 1, Hazel Chatterton 2. Sewing: Hazel Chatterton 1, Ivy Matthews 2 (special prize given by Miss I. Cleaver). Progress: Frank Stuart.

Afternoon tea was supplied by the girls, and then songs were sung by the children, concluding with the National Anthem.

Apropos of strikes, special constables, etc., I might close my remarks with a verse that appeared on a Christmas card at the time of the Trafalgar square riots in London in, I think, 1883, which ran thus: -\ I'd like to be a "special," And with the hobbies stand A badge upon my forearm, f A staff within my hand, I'd quell those big disturbances '"■ • (Best not boast, Lfear), bo I wish you a Happy Christmas And Prosperous New Year.
