THE HAWERA CLUB
The annual meeting was held on Wednesday evening, and though there were only about thirteen present, there was 1 evident a feeling that prospects for the | coming season were quite hopeful. Mr B. McCarthy was voted to the chair. The balance sheet showed that owing to the difficulty of getting in subscriptions, finances were not altogether satisfactory.—lt was resolved that a special effort be made to bring them to a healthy state. —The balance sheet as read was adopted. The following new members were elected: Rev. E. 0. Blamires, Messrs Stapleton, Corp, Johnson, Colclough, Rudkin, Machin, Thompson, Hill, and Potter. The election of officers resulted: Patron 2 Mr G. T. Bayly (re-elected); president, Mr W. G. White (re-elected); vice-presidents, Dr. MacDiarmid, Dr. Thomson, Messrs E. Nalder, H. Halliwell, W. A. Parkinson, R. D. Welsh, G. V. Pearce, M.P., A. W. Gillies, H. Graves; club captain Mr H. Pratt; committee, Rev. E. O. Blamires, Messrs McCarthy, Gardner, Page, and Nichol; selection committee. Rev. E, 0. Blamires, Messrs McCarthy and Pratt; ground committee, Messrs Day : Rudkin and Tissiman-, secretary and treasurer, Mr Tissiman (re-elected). It was resolved to open the season with a match between teams to be selected on Wednesday, October 22. With reference to school cricket, it was decided, as in previous years, to allow six boys from the District High School, at the discretion of the masters, free use of the practice wickets. The secretary was instructed to write to the chairman of the School Committee advising him of this resolution. The hope was expressed that this would lead to a revival in school cricket, and consequently later on supply members for the Cricket Club, and so help cricket generally. A leading member of the Club generously offered, with the approval of the masters, to coach the boys one day a week. Rev. E. 0. Blamires mentioned that the promised visit of a Wellington team to Taranaki was in the hands of Mr A. A. George, of Wellington, and he was quite sure a team would be sent able to give an interesting match with Taranaki. Members generally considered the visit would result in a lot of good to cricket locally. Matches with outside teams infused life and interest. Mr McCarthy mentioned the Wanganui match, which used to be an annual event. 11& hoped an tffort would be; made to revive this fixture. - A vote of thanks to the chair, and to Messrs Welsh, McCarthy and ODea for the use of a room, were unanimously carried.
