The receipts ■ for the month amounted to £95 9s 6d, a decrease of £6 16s 9d. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The borough engineer reported that he was proceeding with the asphalting of High street footpaths, on south side, doing the work on Wednesday afternoons to suit the convenience of shopkeepers. He was also putting screenings on Union street so as to get tarviated surface ready for top-dressing. The grading of High street east was now nearly completed, which would give a much better access to the rubbish tip. During spare time of metal carts he was utilising them to fill up a gully to form part of widening Gladstone street. 'The metal from B^lmont quarry was coming to hand freely. INSPECTOR'S REPORT. The Inspector (Mr Pettett) reported that the sanitary condition of the borough was very satisfactory. Durintr the month there had been two blockages of service drains connecting to the main sewer. These were cleared immediately and at the present time he thought the service drains were all clear. He drew the attention of the Council to the large number of cases where houses were connected to the same service drain. This was a most unsatisfactory state of affairs. In one case where there was trouble with blockages he had served a notice on the owner to provide a separate drain to each house. This work had been carried out, and in future there should be no trouble in locating the occupier who was to blame. Ha al^o drew attention to the sewer main at the Glover road end of Princes street. This main, in his opinion, had not a sufficient fall, and during the month had become blocked. It had1 been cleared, but trouble would again be experienced unless precautions were taken to flush out frequently. He still found taps where water was being wasted, and he would have to take proceedings against some people, so that it would act as a warning to others that water must not be allowed to go to waste He was gradually getting the hedges trimmed back, there being only a few places where the work hafl not, boon done. Those portions of the < report dealing with the drains' were referred to the Works Committee. Tha Council rose at 9.50 o'clock. ■ •
