OPUNAKE TOWN BOARD.

(Fjrou Ouk Own Cokkbspon'dent.) The usual monthly meeting of the above board was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Dudley (chairman), Trotter, Todd, and Ross. Correspondence was read and dealt with as under : — The following applications were granted subject to the Board's regulations:—Mr Brenmer's for permission to take a drain under the footpath; Mr Greenhill's, for permission to connect the stock • inspector's new residence with the gas mains; Mrs Nicol's, applying for title of lease of section 6, block 43. The Department of Internal Affairs, in reply to the Board's request for expediency in vesting the Town Board with authority as a cemetery board, wrote stating that the Department hud written to the Cemetery Board and had received no reply, but the Department would again write to the 'Cemetery Board about the matter. Mr Todd applied for leave, of absence for Mr Mullon, who was unable to attend owing to his protracted illness.— Further leave of absence was granted, the chairman stating that they all sincerely sympathised with Mr Mullon in his illness, and hoped he would soon be btiek amongst them. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman, Mr A. C. Donnelly, re: ported on work done during the month aud recommended putting in a post a few feet from the lamp post in Layard street to prevent vehicles being driven up on to the footpath.—The suggestion was adopted. The foreman also reported that, with Mr Trotter's permission, he had put men on to watch the fire for two nights after the recent outbreak.—The "action, was approved of. It was decided to call for tenders for, maintenance metal for Lower Tennyson street. . ■ ; The noxious weeds inspector's attention is to be called to gorse on various owners' frontages in the township, and he is to be asked to take what steps he may deem necessary to have: the law complied with. ' The Gas Company's attention is to be called to a small leak in the generator and they are to be asked to attend to it. The foreman stated that he was satisfied with the work done by private owners in regard to drain-laying, etc., but lie suggested that if a deposit was asked for and insisted on, he felt sure it would materially improve the work' done. On the motion of the chairman, sec-. onded by Mr Ross, it was unanimously decided to strike a general rate of id in the £ over the rateable area for the ensuing year. Accounts amounting to £76 10s 2d, with wages added, were passed for payment, and the Board then rose.
