BOWLING.
BANNER COMPETITION
There was a large gathering of bowlers at the Hawera Club's green on YVednesday afternoon to see the play-off between the Pa tea and Pihama clubs for the southern championship in the Banner competition. The afternoon was beautifully fine, the green was in good order, and an enjoyable time was spent. The game was evenly contested, and the issue in doubt almost to the last head. Robertson and Harrop were running level for a long time, but the former had a good lead at the finish. Mason, though, had a strong lead over Hulbert; but Elliott for a considerable time was well ahead of Lambie, but the latter eventually ] ulled up, and finished up a point to the good. The position was continually changing, and after the other two rinks had finished, and Mason and Hulbert. had three heads to play, there was only three points difference in thfl aggregate. On the nineteenth head Mason got one, and on the twentieth two points, and the lead was thus six, with one head to go. This n.ade the outlook pretty hopeless for Patea, ar>d though Hulbert made a dead heat in order to have another try the handicap proved too much, and he could score only one on the last head, and the game went to Pihama. The following, are details, Pihama being mentioned first: — Campbell, Conaglen, McHardy, Harrop, 14; Wood, Pearce, Christensen, Robertson, 22. Bayb's, Julian, Lambie, Mason, 28; Homer, Campbell, Williams, Hulbert, 16. Pohi. Riley, Edwards, Lambie, 18; Holtham, O'Shea, Gilshnan, Elliott, 17. Totals: Pihama, 60; Patea, 55. Immediately afterwards Pihama and New Plymouth got into telephonic communication, and arranged to play off on Hawera Green this afternoon. Subsequently it was also arranged that New Plymouth and Hawera should play a game in the mornir.g. This game is now being played.
