EMPIRE TRADE COMMISSION

(Received April 24, 8.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, April 24. The Empire Trade Commission has concluded its sittings in Sydney. Mr J. L. Trefle, Minister of Agriculture, gave evidence that the State Savings Bank provided a million per annum for settlement purposes, and had already received applications for £1,200,000. He was confident it would place £3,000,000 during the current year in assisting bona fide settlers. The banks were very tight and people were not met in any shape or form to the extent they should for development of the country. The president of the Harbor Improvement Committee was providing 42,000 ft of wharf frontage, at a cost of six and a-half millions, which would take a decade to complete. At the present rate of development the proposed extension would be fully wanted by that time.
