President Taft, in a speech officially accepting the Republican nomination, frankly recognised the popular unrest, which he promised to satisfy. He urged the necessity for legislation to secure for the poor equality of opportunity with "the .rich, and annoimced that his chief pliWiks would be the integrity of the Constitution, the maintenance of business prosperity, and moderate scientific protection, as against the Democrats' proposed revenue tariff. He added that the Republicans, unlike the Democrats, have a normal constructive programme, ■which they are ready and able to carry out.
