New Zealanders have also to be protected by the Customs from another fraud. Large quantities of goods are being manufactured on the Continent, under sweating conditions, by people who are paid only Is lOd to 3s a day. These goods are marked "Best quality, made^in London," and then shipped to New Zealand, via London, thus escaping the preferential duty imposed on foreign-made goods. One of the duties of a new Customs expert to be stationed in England, on behalf of the New Zealand Customs authorities, will be to advise them on these matters.
