A MURDEROUS ASSAULT.
AUCKLAND, June 26. As A. J. Roberts, a stationer at Ep- . com was leaving his shop last night he was murderously assaulted by a man, •who presumably intended to rifle th^ premises, and was struck over the head with a heavy piece of timber. The , wound inflicted was serious and if it "bad been two inches lower would have toeen fatal. Roberts grappled with the ; man and shouted for the police. A de- ► teo+lve and three constables responded ■and gave chase to the assailant, but ■rare unable to effect his capture.
