NAPIER, June 25. In opening the Supreme Court the Chief Justice congratulated the district on the light calendar presented. Referring to the case in which a Maori is charged with manslaughter arising out of a motor fatality at Waipawa, his Honor said the fact of accused having been undei the influence of liquor did not dispose of his liability, but made matters worse. After the accident the throttle of the car was found to be open and the car Uad evidently been travelling at the rate of forty miles an hour. Such neglect as had been exhibited was criminal. The jury returned true bills in all cases . •

NAPIER, June 25. At the criminal sittings of the Supreme Court, Frederick Wilson, for theft of a horse, and gig and harness, was acquitted. Thomas Carroll ws.-s found guilty of criminally assaulting a little girl at Wairoa, and sentence was deferred until Friday. A case in which Annie Solomon was charged with using an instrument for unlawful purposes was adjourned til next session, owing to the illness of the woman on whom the instrument was used;
