SALVAGE OPERATIONS
BY TELEGRAPH -PRESS ASSOCIATION,
GISBORNE, June 2-5. The weather has moderated, and salvage operations in connection with the Star of Canada are proceeding in calm weather. All the efforts are being devoted to lightening the cargo from the after holds, which are practically full. The after holds are quite dry. There is 24 feet of water in the three forward holds. The boiler and engine rooms are dry. Captain Hart states that there is no structural disarrangement of the hull, and the steamer lies in a most favorable position. The outlook is much more favorable.
The Terawhiti arrives to-morrow, and will commence pumping operations immediately.
