COST OF LIVING.

A PROTEST.

BY TELUGB.APH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.

AUCKLAND, June 24. An emphatic protest was made at the Cost of Living Commission to-day by I)r Mcllray, inspector of schools, regarding the difficulty of obtaining data regarding economic questions. The statistics as far as economic matters are ■concerned, are very unsatisfactory," said Dr Mellray. "These statistical*investigations should be carried out by competent people. For instance, not very long ago I had to get figures regarding wages from the police-station." (Laughter.) Dr Mcllray further remarked that he considered there should be co-ordination among different Departments. Ho suggested that a trained statistician should be engaged from England or America, although our investigators had been engaged on this work for some time. The country was only a young one, and it would be a good thing to obtain the services of an expert in order that he might teach officials how to deal with data from a scientific basis.
