NEW PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL MAGAZINE,

{'Et coniitate, et virtute, et sapientia," which may be translated into comrade--ship, manliness, wisdom; and what better can be cultivated in the youth of a country? If every boy sets his lite by such a motto, and bears it before him in his path through -the world, he will make a good man and a good citizen, of use to his town and to his country. One of the strongest in<»ntives to a good useful life are the traditions handed down through the history of our public schools or high, schools. The New Plymouth Hi"h -fcehool m the first issue of the school magazine—a cony of which has come to this office—rightly impresses on the boys and the readers generally the fact that the school life is not to be made up solely of study, though that is of the highest importance. The cultivation of character and sowing the «eeds of a good useful life— this ?s the true purpose of all scholastic institutions. Every boy should, as far as he as able, take his part in all the activities of his school's life, and in that ivay fit himself for a man's part in the world. New Plymouth Old Boys hare inspiring examples set before them in the work done for their schools by the Old Boys of Wellington, "Wanganui, Christchurch, Dunedin, Waltaki, and Nelson. If, when they have been as long formed as their kindred societies, they have as good a career of usefulness to look back on, they will know their labor has not *een in vain. The work done by these magazines in forming and maintaining esprit de corps among the old boys of a school is well recognised. We wish i;his latest publication a long career of lienorable usefulness.
