HAWERA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The monthly meeting of the Hawera District High School Committee was held on Friday evening. There were present: Messrs E. B. Bates (chairman), J. Champion (secretary), L. A. Bone, Skeat, Mesdames Best and Browne. The headmaster (Mr Strack) reported "that owing to the prevalence of mumps the attendance had been very low during the whole month. He thought the school should be. again thoroughly disinfected. He was pleased to report that the school gained first prize for product of school gardens and also several prizes for special roots at the recent show. The prize'money would carry a subsidy, and in anticipation of this the chairman and himself bought native shrubs to the value of £1. Two grates had been placed in the school as an

The headmaster, in referring to the report, said the grates had settled the ire question, and he considered they gave out a better heat than did the ordinary fireplaces, in which wood was Tised. Speaking of the attendance, he said it had been better during the week, but he thought it would be advisable i» close the school for a week to enable the school to be properly disinfected, and to allow of a Letter attendance on the re-opening.-Mr Bone moved that the school be •closed as suggested from Monday next. This would be better than running the risk of losing a teacher as the result of "the decreased attendance.

Mr Champion seconded the motion. The chairman said the course proposed was certainly the best one. Other members agreed, and the motion was carried.

It was decided to purchase six grates -at 11s each (cost of grates and workTtianship), and also to ask the Board to defray the expense. The Wanganui Education Board advised, the committee that it had decided in future that the pupils of the secondary department of the Hawera District High School should attend the Technical . School for instruction in elementary science.

The Chairman: The Board has ordered it, and I don't suppdse we can do anything. This is not the first time a -e'.ass has been sent down there, and I don't suppose it will be the last. The headmaster pointed out that time must be lost in going to the Technical .School. The class could be taken at the Mii^h School all right, with perhaps more* advantage. Mr Bone thought the committee should enter a protest against the new, arrangement The headmaster said Some" OliTggeS Md go down there, particularly for Mr _Brpwn s class. But this class was oh IFriday, and was the last lesson of the day.

The. chairman agreed that it would be as. well to point out to the Board that the present time-table was very inconvenient, and to ask that the arrangement which formerly existed be continued. He referred particularly to this elementary class. He moved in this direction.

Mr Bone seconded the motion, which "was carried.

The Board also wrote confirming the appointment of Mr L. A. Wilson to the P? sltJ°n of fifth assistant at the school. Mr Wilson has commenced duty. Seven applications were received for the position of caretaker, and a ballot resulted in Mr G. Gunn being appoint-

m The headmaster mentioned that during the 14 years Mr Morgan had held the position he had not missed a-day— probably a record. Mr Morgan had carried out his duties efficiently. Mr Bone moved a motion" expressing appreciation of Mr Morgan's long and taithful services.
