LAKE IN THE PARK.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I was disappointed on reading your report in last night's Star of the decision of the Borough Council to go ahead with the lake on the one amount of £50, so generously promised by Mr Macklam. Is it quite fair to Mr Macklam to sink his one amount into such a "lake," without giving the public a chance to help swell the amount? Some time since you had one or two articles on model yachting in your paper, and I was hoping that we should soon have a decent sheet of water suitable for the sport, and which would be an attraction, not only to the children but also to the adult'portion of the community. A pool about half a chain long (vide Engineer's estimate, proportionately), to my way of thinking, will be no use and very little ornament to the park, and there will be the risk of a leak at the join if the lake is enlarged in the future. Before the work i.s started the Mayor should call a public meeting to discuss ways and means of constructing a lake worthy of the park.
