UPROAR AT CONVENTION ROLL-

Mr Roosevelt had a great reception at his hotel. He shook hands with •crowds of admirers, until he was forced to retire exhausted. He addressed a vast audience in the e\*ening. .He -declared: "We are standing for elementary decency. It is not a.political, but a great moral, issue." He added that President Taft had surrendered himself wholly to the bidding of professional bosses, and was countenancing sharp trickery ivhich was just within the law. He defeated President Taft by two-to-one in the primaries, and had the people behind him. "Our democracy," be said, "is'being put to a vital test. The conflict is between human right and special privilege asserted as a property right." He concluded : "With unflinching hearts and undimmed eyes avc stand at Armageddon. We will battle, for the Lord."

Mr proposed that uncontested delegates should decide the matter of contested delegates. As Mr Roosevelt's uncontested votes greatly outnumbered President Taft's the proposal is likely to precipitate a crisis.

At the first Convention roll-call today uproar was feared. Twelve hundred assistant sergeants-at-arms Avere enrolled, and a large force of police kept within the chairman's call.

Mr William Jennings Bryan states that the size of the negro honorarium is apparently a determining factor in the struggle.
