STRIKE COMMITTEE'S STATEMENT

WAIHI, May 17. The position of affairs is unaltered. The strike committee made a statement regarding the coal incident, to the effect that the borough engineer explained that he had bought ; on behalf of the Borough Council 60 odd tons of coal from the Grand Junction Company, which had been refused transit by the strike committee. It was stated that a supply of coal for the gas-works was on the road, and the strike committee was of opinion that the coal purchased from the Junction Company was not wanted for the hospital, as it was slack ; and unuseable for fireplaces, and the boi-ough had sufficient coal to meet all hospital requirements. The Mayor was informed :that the. strike committee would see that the requirements of the sick in the hospital would be considered by their committee.

A statement was also made that the hospital authorities Avere retaliating for the non-delivery of the coal by refusing admittance of a striker's child to the hospital.
