GOLD-MINING.

A GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY.

[By Telegraph —Bpkota& to Star.] WELLINGTHON, May 14. The Government has decided to subsidise deep sinking at Boatman's, about fourteen miles from Reef ton. Mr Jas. Colvih, the Minister of Mines, informs me that the subsidy- is" on the £ for £ basis up to £10,000, and the sinking will be carried, out on the site of the Old Welcome and Fiery Cross claims, two of the richest, on the West Coast. They gave out, but the deeper levels were never exploited, though in other parts of the district it has since been proved' that the deeper the sinking the richer the gold. Some shafts are down 2000 fret. Mr Colvin understands that English capital" is available to carry out the work.
