SWIMMING.

MATHER BENEFIT CARNIVAL

The swimming carnival held at the Hawera Baths on Tuesday evening proved a great success, ''and provided, an evening's excellent entertainment. Thanks in a great measure to the energy of the club captain (Mr J. Grant) in Beating up competitors, first-class entries were received^ and this, aided by the good work of the handicappers, Messrs VV. J. Mahoney and Kean, resulted in a strong muster of swimmers for each event, and closely contested racing. The public turned up in force to witness the sport, it being estimated that over 500 persons paid for admission; and were more than satisfied with the fun provided. Musical selections by the band under Conductor T. B. McConnell, helped to enliven proceedings. The Senior Cup, 100 yards, was won by W. Claringbold, who-was in receipt of lsec. from Jno. .Grant, and the same swimmer, who is evidently in "fine form at present, also got away, with the Mather Handicap, 125 yards. In each case the places behind him were filled by Jno. Grant and M. Carr respectively. With a handicap of ssec. C. Kivell proved too good for the opposition in the Junior Cup, and the final of the Sutton Handicap went to E. Kivell, of Stratford, from the 7sec. mark. D. Thurston Avon both the boys' and open diving events. One of the best 'curns" of the evening was that in which young Eric Gibson, a child not yet five years old, and who is learning to swim, dived into the bath, to be picked up by the swimming instructor, Mr W. J. Mahoney. The performance was a striking proof of the confidence which the children have, in their tutor, and even when Mr Mahoney, dived with the boy on his back, the child's face was all smiles as the pair came to the surface of the water, and received the plaudits of the assemblage. The carnival was ably conducted %v the following officials: Starter, Mr W. J. Mahoney; check starter, Mr F. H. Boase-; timekeepers, Messrs J. ahd H. Brunette and R. Morrissey; judges (swimming), Messrs Holder,'Kean, and Perrett, (diving) Messrs Mahoney and Kenn; call stewards, Messrs Wallace, F. Boase, fun., G. Maingay, H. Bate; usher, Mr M. Cameron; secretary, Mr E. Dewhirst. During the evening Mr Mahoney, on behalf of the promoters, thanked the public and all wjio had assisted to make, the carnival a success for their support, and the club also desires to return thanks to Mrs B. Harrington and Messrs F. W. Sutton and J. White for trophies given by them. One small matter to which the" officials rightly took exception was the thought-' less action of a few among the spectators, who threw away cigarette ends into the bath, but as this was doubtless only the result of thoughtlessness, it is unlikely to occur again now that attention has been drawn to it. The results of the various events were as follow :— Girls' Race, 25 yards.—M. Mather, ssec, 1: T. Chadwick, lsec, 2. Only starters. Time, 26sec. Senior Cup, 100 yards.—W. Claringbold, lsec., 1; Jno.
