Mr J. S. Palmer, president of the Licensed Victuallers' Association, has a letter in the Christchureh Press which argues than when Parliament began to legislate against barmaids, it undertook a more difficult task than it thought of. "What is a bar?" hangs another question, "What is a barmaid?" and according to Mr Paimer's reading of the Act there is a good deal of misconception on both points. A bar is defined as any room, passage, or lobby in an hotel, "©pen immediately" to the street, wherein the public may enter and purchase liquors. No hotel may have more than one such bar, and Mr Palmer argues that the compartments in hotels known as "private bars," cannot Be re-? garded as bars, because they do' not open directly on to the street; therfore tbe young women who serve behind the counters in these compartments cannot be barmaids, and do not come under the restrictive clauses of the Act. Mr William Perry told the Masetrton A. and P. Association that he had this year succeeded in beating the Chinese in the cultivation of cabbage. He had planted an acre with cow cabbage late in the season, and he found that this had resisted the blight. Not only had he secured a supply sufficient for his ov ■ stock, but he had been able to sell a quantity to the Chinaman. You can stop that cough with Zymole Trokeys.
