BRUTAL HUSBAND'S FATE

EXCITING SCENE IN GERMAN

TOWN

An extraordinary scene took place the other morning in one of the main streets of Halle, in Germany. A house-painter named Heitel had frequently been abandoned by hifl wife in consequence of his brutality, but had always been r '..le to induce her to return to him. However, she left him once more, and tade it Clear to him that this time she was determined not to come back.* She took refuge in the dwelling of a friend m the street in question. Here Heitel appeared and discharged the contents of a revolver at random, wounding his wife, the woman who had afforded her shelter, and the infant that the latter was carrying in her arms. The report of the shots were heard through the open window, and a large j crowd assembled outside in the busy street. The police in due time also appeared upon the scene, but the man had barricaded the doors, and, brandishing his weapon, shouted from the window that! he would sihoot anyone who tried to approach him. He seems also to have made an attempt to attack the two women with an axe. As the police wished to prevent unnecessary bloodshed, they brought up three of their dogs, and informed Heitel that they intended to burst open the doors and leave these animals to deal with him. The man then fired a bullet into his throat, and flung himself down from the window, which is on the second storey. He was removed in a vdying state to the hospital, whither the two women and the child were also conveyed.
