A CHINESE LOAN.

An edict has been issued authorising a loanof ten million sterling at 5- per cent., issuable at 95. Of this two million is intended for the benefit of Manchuria, and the rest for currency reform.

The sudden ' drowning of a good swimmer is not due to cramp, as generally supposed. There is no reason, says a high medical authority, why cramp in a leg should prevent an ordinary swimmer supporting himself in the water by his hands or on his back, or cause him to throw up his hands and sink once for aU like a stone. The explanation is that the drum of the ear is perforated, and the pressure of water causes vertigo and unconsciousness. The closing of the leaves of plants as tho evening comes on was at first supposed by botanists to be due to the . difference, in temperature ; but on transplanting the plants into a hothouse it was found that the same phtnomenon occured, the leaves closing at sunset. .Bamboo is of universal use in China. If a knife is mislaid, a good sharp edge of bamboo is taken, and it does just as wel for everything, except cutting bamboo, as if it were steel.. .Hunger is kept off by cutting the little tender shoots just as they peep from the ground, and cooking them like asparagus. . One of the biggest schemes of railway electrification ever attempted in England is to be set afoot at Manchester in order to cope with the growing competition of the tramway cars. Three railways, the Great Central, the Lancashire and Yorkshire, and the London and North-Western, are to start elaborate electric services on many of their lines radiating round Manchester, tapping dozens of towns and suburbs.
