THE MAGISTRACY.

MR WAKE REPLIES.

[PRESS ARBOOTATION.I ELTHAM, April 11. Interviewed this morning, Mr G. P. Wake said the resolution of the solicitors wired from Hawera on Saturday inferred that ati attack was made here last Wednesday on Mr Greenfield. This was not correct.

What he objected to was the system of the Government in re-appointing aged and long-retired Magistrates to the Bench.

The retiring age for Magistrates is 65, and Mr Greenfield is over 80. Mr Wake made aio attack on Mr Greenfield, nor on any Magistrate, that he was not of the highest integrity and honor, and he disclaims any intention of doing so. To prevent the recurrence of the reappointment of aged and retired Magistrates he has forwarded to the Minister a requisition asking for the appointment of a permanent relieving -Magistrate for the North Island.

This requisition is signed by 19 solicitors in Eltham, Hawera and Stratford.
