BLAZE IN CHRISTCHURCH.

CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. A fire occurred at 5.50 a.m. to-day i- n business premises in High street, near the corner of Cashel street, consisting of three stories and a baesment.

Messrs Wallace and Co., chemists, occupied tho ground floor and the basement, and the second floor was occupied as consulting rooms by Drs O'Brien and Duncan, Dr Newell, dentist, antd the other tenants were Mr Michael, oculist, Mr Wright, music teacher. jThe fire originated in a small room under the staircase ,on the first floor, used for storing bicycles, coals and odds and ends.

It was severely damaged by fire. The contents of the basement were considerably damaged by water, and the remainder of the building was much damaged by heat and smoke. The premises are owned by Mrs W. Darby, and aro insured for £5500 in the United and £1000 in the Royal Exchange Office.

Messrs Wallace and Co.'s stock is insured as follows: £2500 in the North Queensland, £1900 in the Royal Exchange, £1000 in the London and Liverpool and Globe, £1000 in the New Zealand Co., and £550 in the Victoria Office, v

Mr Newell is insured for £30 in tho State Office, Dr O'Brien for £50 in the Alliance Office, and Mr Wright for £250 in the State Office. '
