DAIRY PIIODUCE.

The butter and cheese markets remain steady, the former being 122s to 123s per cwt., and cheese 63s per cwt for white and 61s for colored. II 11I 1 actory owners appear to have great confidence in the future, for one big factory in the Auckland province has just ottered its autumn-winter make at 12£ d, other (Taranaki) oilers are llfd; but buyers' ideas are lid. If factories continue to consign they will make the local price j high, because now is the time when I ■winter supplies are laid m, and some ' difficulty is being experienced in getting them at prices buyers are prepared to pay. The factories are by no means easy to deal with with London prices where they are. The London market is generally very risky after about the 15th of this month. The season is keeping up well, however, and there appears to be plenty of feed. With regard to cheese, it is not expected that there will be much rise in the price for home consumption, contracts having already been [ made for them at well under 6d, which is the price to-day. The wreck of the Pericles, and the loss of 31,000 boxes ot butter in this disaster, is believed to have had a temporary effect upon the market prices hardening in consequence of the disaster. Indeed, a New Zealand shipper received fully 2s per cwt more than he expected shortly after the news of the wreck reached London. It is most difficult to secure any cheese in the Dominion to-day. Buyers are offering .s£d f.o.b. for good brands of South Island cheese, and some business has been done at that figure. The export for the South Island this season is expected to be fully 25 per cent greater than last. Victorian butter factories now pay Is 4d for their boxes. A movement is on foot to manufacture them by a co-operation of factories at Is each. — Wellington Post.
