GOVERNMENT ROADING WORKS.

WELLINGTON, October 25.

Scarcity of labor is likely to be the worst difficulty of the Roads Department in expending the special grants of £250,000 for backblock roads this year. There are 2734 men at work now, a thousand more than at this time last year, and the Department could place another four hundred in various parts of the country. The main purpose to which the backblocks allocation will be applied will be widening bridle tracks and dray roads, and it is expected that between four and five hundred miles can be dealt with during the year. A new method of allocating the expense of superintendence and administration enables the whole of a road grant to be utilised for the actual work of road making.

FIRE ON THE MANUKA.

DUNEDIN, October 26.

A fire was discovered in No: 4 hold on board the Manuka about 10.45 p.m. on Saturday. Fortunately all the officers and engineers were on board, and they turned out promptly and soon had the fire under, but owing to the dense smoke the fire brigade was summoned on the assumption that the fire was serious. It appears to have originated amongst some straw and old canvas. None of the cargo was damaged, and the loss is small.
