HAWERA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.

The monthly meeting of the School Committee was held on Monday evening;,, present— Rev. Shore (chairman), Messrs Johnson, Tait, Bates, Reid, ! Grant, and Rev. Cassell. ■ HEADMASTER'S, REPORT: The headmaster reported that since last meeting the two class-rooms previously reported on had been painted and also partition in the infant room, which was a great improvement to the rooms. In connection with Arbor Day celebrations Messrs Groome (Rahotu) had donated three bundles of trees and shrubs, Messrs Laird and Sons (Wanganui) one' bundle, and Mr Boyd (Hawera) one bundle. Mr Boyd had also rendered valuable service in the planting. These donations of trees carried a subsidy of £ for £, and the value of the plants received and a few monetary donations in hand would total about 70s. He had also written for donations of seeds, and as these also carried a subsidy he suggested that the committee await the result and then apply for the whole of the subsidy on donations at one time. It wpuld be a good plan, he thought, if those of the committee who had not been through #ie school would visit on a Tuesday when some of the practical subjects were taught. The Chairman mentioned that the Arbor Day celebrations . were successful. There was still a large number of shrubs and trees in hand, and he recommended that the ground be prepared and these planted. On the motion of Messrs Bates and Grant, the Visiting Committee were appointed to attend to the matter of planting the trees left over. It was decided to send letters of thanks to those who bad donated trees and shrubs. It was resolved to ask the headmaster to communicate with Kempthorne, SProsser and Co. or their local, agents,, , for donations of manure. Mr Bates and Rev. Cassell were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. The Chairman reported having had' small repairs attended to, and it was agreed that the Visiting Committee have power to have any necessary repairs effected. On the motion of Messrs Grant anfl Bates, it was resolved to ask the Borough Council to kerb the footpath in front of school and put a culvert in the channel. Accounts were passed, and the meeting adjourned.
