KAPUNI.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Winter has set in with a vengeance with us. The .rainfall 6inee the beginning of the month has been exceedingly heavy, and evetn when we .do receive the benefit of the sum ins rays can scarcely be felt. Mount Egmoat has taken on it» winter covering to remind us that we need- expect no more . good growing weather before next spring. The milk supply has "imply collapsed. One supplier told me thai "wx'h* 1c1 c ' warm rains his supply went xrp 4001bs pe* <? a .y 5 1"™ he . is t receiving even less than A< the «M or- J he spelL Two well-known Kaptmi settlers who are eontettlplating leasing of Celling their present holdings took a trip out to beyond: WhaiTßgatnomona, and returned- perfectly satisfied to allow others' to do the pioneering in that direction. They described the country as being wild and inhospitable in £he extreme, and' in my opinion they are quite correct. I once "swagged it." from Toko to beyond ' Strathmore iln .mid-winter, and can truthfully state that no man has a<ny business "to take his wife and children to such am out-of-the-way portion of "God's OwnForsaken Country." , ~' : The HaJl Committee have again., given' tie an example of their generosity,- or rather I should' state anticipate doing so, It is rumored that' they intend lowering their charge for the" use of the Hall for the dressmaking classes to the exceedingly low "price of 5s per day. They did' not wish, I presume, .to lie. outdone, in generosity by the coninuttees ot other halls in the vicinity of,, jf apumi. I hear' on good authority that the- charge males' by them ' for the use of their halls Ranges 1 ! from- 9d ! to 2s per day, so now the t&t\,has taken our local committee-Lam 'aff^id^that they will lower their charge stilt- moire. The local school" has beep without the/ services of an assistant anwrtpess during the last six .weeks. t , Mies <M.>Whyte is at present reJie'ving in that position. If- 1 remember rightly the school" was without an . assistant' about this time last year. The enlargement to the school, has not yet been undertaken ; ' the tenders for same have not even yet been called, alt 1 ough Mr Dixon, the Board member for this end of the district, was promised at the last meeting of the Education Board that they would be called for within the week. Several parents are protesting at being compelled to send their children to school to be crammed three into a. desk and be crowded forty into a room 15ft by 20ffc. Hawera can got £1200 for a technical school ; we cannot get even fair play.

The Leap Year Ball eventuated last Tuesday night, and, 'considering the wet, cold state of the weather, was a' great success. The secretaries,- Misses K. Hughes Bind N. Beaven, could not have cairied out their duties more satisfactorily, and as M.C.'s were all that could be desired. The floor and music were excellent for -dancing, and -all -present* enjoyed the evening thoroughly;- It is a pity the night turned out* pot "wintry, as h<id the weather been finer a very large number would hay© been present.

This is a symptom rather than a disease. It indicates that- there ia some obstruction in the bile duct, -which' may result from a cold, a gall stone, or a thickening of the bile from -some other cause. The bile not being eliminated by the proper process, is absorbed in the system and diffused through the blood. It is manifested by yellowness of the skm and the white of the -eyes, loss of appetite, disinclination for exercise, sleepiness and sometimes sickness at the stomach.
