I The stormy weather last week did a good deal of damage in South Westlaaid, traffic being interrupted for ten days. Mr T. Y. Scddon, M.P., who is on tour of the district delivering pre-sessional addresses, was delayed ten days in the Haosb district, owing to floods and road damage. The storm was a prolonged one, and in twelve days twenty inches of rain fell at Okuru. Lightening and thunder were almost incessant. The telephone line was badly damaged, and is still interrupted. In the far south floods destroyed roads, and all ford crossings were badly ecoured out. NEW ZEALAND HEMP. AUCKLAND, April 8. The total quantity of New Zealand hemp graded at Auckland by the Government gnader during the year ended March 31 last, was 43,692 bales, or 7126 toois, valued arf> £95,000. For the same period 1250 tons of tow, worth about £6000, passed through the grading works, making the total value of the hemp dressed at Auckland for the year £101,000. The "figures show a decrease on the previous year of 627 bales, or 860 tons. The Government grader indicates that from Aprid 1 a remission of Id per cwt is to be made in herap-grading fees. TRAIN COLLID'eTwITH A CART. WELLINGTON, April 7. A train from the Hutt collided with a grocer's cart at Thomdon to-day. The driver of the cart, James Carson, was thrown out and suffered serious injuries. He was unconscious at the hospital at a late hour 'to-night. THE DAIRY REGULATIONS. DUNEDIN, April 7. The Hon. R. McNab, in replying to a deputation oi dairymen, gave a distinct promise that the substantial improvements m regard' to dairies and byres would not be enforced until there was sufficient statutory authority for compellibg the landlord to bear his portion of the cost. It was not intended to ask that byres be completely concreted, but there was a necessity for having some form of paving which would be impervious to water. Power would be given for appeal from a decision of an inspector to the Chief Inspector of Stock. If the regulations did mot , work satisfactorily he would be prepared, at the end of twelve mourtljs, to rcoomsider tbe -whole position. Ho wished to make it quite clear that the desire of the Department was to nrake the regulations educative rather than punitive.
