OPUNAKE BRANCH.

The annual meeting of the Opunake branch of the «- New Zealand Farmers' Union was held' on Saturday ; present — Messrs A. Cross (Chairman), Stevenson, Ching, S. Feaver, C. S. Strong, Warner, Mac Fie, Forsyth, S. Campbell, J. Conaglen, Brennan, D. McGregor.

The Secretary, presented the report and balance-sheet for the past year. It showed the handsome credit in hand of £14 Os 2d.— Adopted.

The Chairman, Mr Croßs, in his retiring address, spoke of the work done by the Union during its existence, and claimed that among other things it had been instrumental in shaping the Bush and Swamp Lands Act', the Single Electorate Act, the Native Land Rating Act, and the Maori Land Settlement Act ; and to- have materially helped 1 in opening native -lands for settlement, establishing labor bureaus, preserving the three- land tenures*, remedying railway anomalies, obtaining compensation for condemned) stock,, ,and other advantages for farmers. <

It was the feeling of the meeting that Mr Cross should hold the position of Chairman for the coming year, but he said that he was sorry that he was unable to do so 01} account of. his very bad health of late, and. that he would hay e do vacate the,. chair.

Mr M:, J. Brennan was unanimously elected jCha-irman.Jor the coming year. Mr Brennan thanked 'Jfche -members; -for the honor conferred on him, and said he would do his best for the welfare of the Union.

The following general committee was elected: Messrs M. J. Brennan (chair), Lambje, senr., Forsyth, Stevenson, Allan-,- McGregor, Coombridge, Conaglen, Mac Fie, S. Parkes, Looney, O'Rorke, Warner, Maxwell, Campbell, S. FeaVer, Cross, Ching, and Strong.

The annual subscription was fixed at 108; hon. members Is.

Mr Maxwell was re-elected auditor.

Mr Forsyth was unanimously elected delegate to the conference to be held in Hawera in May.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the late Chairman, and an extra two guineas voted to the Secretary for his services rendered during the past year.

Other business having been dealt with the meeting rose at 5 p.m.
