THE BESSES 0' TH' BARN

SECOND PROGRAMME. Despite the most unpleasant wtathex prevailing on Friday afternoon, a very , large number of people journeyed to the •; Racecourse to hear this popular bandt's j second programme. Th' 3 large stand was packed, and besides theTe was a fair nuinj ber on the lawn. Before the band com- ! menced Mr.C. E. Major, M.H.R., in a brief speech expressed the appreciation felt by the people of Hawera at the magnificent playing, whale regretting that the i weather was so unkind. The programme was excellent. The high wind interfered materially with the effect of the playing, the sound being blown tight away in all the subdued accompaniments. The march "Australasian," "Gems of Scotia," .the ' overture to the "Bohemian Girl," with j its lovely cornet solo capitally played by : Mr Moore, the "Geisha," and a pretty i waltz by Gumgi were, -under the circum- • stances, the moat .effective. Mir Tom I Bowling made a great impression with his j trombone solo "The Flight of Ages" and 1 .his encore number "Death of Nelson." 1 The "Tannihauser" selection was very fine and much enjoyed, but was to some extent spoilt by the wind. "Lead, Kindly Light," , played as an encore to "Bohemian Girl," j was, as on Thursday night, warmly apprei ciated. It was most unfortunate that j weather conditions were so unfavorable. ! Had it been a fair, quiet day the performance would probably have been appreciated even more than was that in the Opena House. Bub notwithstanding the gale the audience 1 came away with a high idea of the of the band, and look forward in the hope that some day they may have a chance of again hearing the Besses •under more favorable 'circumstances.
