THE BESSES 0' TH' BARN

On Thursday evening at 8 o'clock v the residents of Hawera and surrounding districts will have presented to them by the "Rloyal Besses o' th' Barn Band" one of their world-renowned performance©, of which the Lyttelton Times says.— "The Besses o' th* Barn" Band scored an immense success on their first appearance in the colonies. Their playing was admittedly &• revelation in band playing. No* one ever dreamed such tenderness of tone and softness of quality could be won from sounding brass. , There was no use for criticiain in the face of the performance which this wonderful band gave. Pausing to note the delicate purity of the soprano, the listener was forced to recognise the beautifully rounded brass. v Drinking in the magnififcence of the individual parts, he was compelled to note the precision of attack, the masterly release of the notes, the brilliance and finish of the whole band, the charming nuances, and bright polUShed finish of every phrase and every featuire. The first conviction that struck home was tihte sense of wonderful crispness of the music. Having digested this, the listener waa overwhelmed in conflict between appreciation of the consistently magnificent tone and theummenSity of character which was imparted to the music. Much of this was due to ihe personality of Conductor Owen, as well, as to .his musical ability. He holds the band in tne hollow of his hand, 5 and r plays upon it v as a musician would play^sipon an instrument he loved. There earft .no ifineworkß-in ! bis'conducting, no thjrowijjg .- v tifye laimejight upon himself. He simply draws the band to an expression of ii^ best by magnetism, which even outdideTS canno^fail't^.jeoomMse."
