UNDERWEIGHT CALVES.

SOME AUCKLAND CASES [PRESS ASSOCIATION.]

AUCKLAND, July 9

At the Police Court to-day Harry Wil- - eon, a slaughterman, of Mount Roskill, was charged wifh donessing for sale a oalf . weighing less than 601bs. Joseph Pascoe was charged with unlawfully procuring Wilson to dress a oalf, sold to a butcher named William Morrow, which, when weighed dn the shop by the • police was found to be only 421bs. The charges weTe brought under the regulations under the Slaughtering and 1 Inspection Act. The regulation, while requiring dTes&ed weight to be not leis& than 601b5., did not interpret the words "dipessed w»3Jght." It was contended for the defence that "dTessed weight" included head, feet, skin, and flux. The calf was admittedly one day old. Owing to the conflict of 'testimony as to the pTobable weight of the parts mentioned and the abssaice of interpTetation of the woods "dressed weight," tba Magistrate dismissed the case-.

William Morrow was charged with exposing far sale a calf not slaughtered in accordance with the provisions of the Art.

William Clark was charg-ed with sdlhif to Morrow this calf, and, also with

having slaughtered at a place not Tegistered under the Act.

The Stock Inspector stated there was a large traffic in caJves going on, and undoubtedly very many under-weight calves were being sold to restaurants, Chinese, and so on, but it was very difficult to catch th© offenders. There was also a large trade in pigs slaughtered in unlicensed places. In his opinion, stringent measures would have to be taken to prevent the 6ale of under-weight calves.

Tiie Magistrate fined Morrow £1 and costs, ,and Clarke 10s and costs. He stated that heavy penalties would be iaflioted in future for such offences.
