OBITUARY.

MR P. S. GARVEY.

WELLINGTON, July 7. ( Mr Patrick S. Garvcy, Governor "of the Gaol in Wellington for many years, who had been ill for some \veeks_. died this n-orning. Deceased was at one time in the Irish Constabulary, and had been connected with the New Zealand Prison Depart ment since 1874 Two months ago he was laid aside with an attack of pleurisy, and the added trouble of heart affection 'madfl his condition so serious that the doctors were- alarmed. Later on, however, he gave ?igns of returning health, and h-i gradually improved until it was thougtit that in a wook's time he would be fit to resume his office duties. This morning, after he, had been talking quietly to one of his children, he suddenly collapsed and died. Death was due to heart failure. Deceased was born in 1850. in Ireland. He ]>egan life as a clerk in a County Inspector's office, and bad experience in the Soyal Irish Constabulary Force before coming to Xew Zealand in his early manhood. At the age of 22 he was appointed by the Prison Department to a post in Lyttelton gaol, and he made more than ordinary progress in regard to promotion From 1875 to 1881 he was clerk in the prison, and he then volunteered for discipline duty. In 1882 he was transferred to Wellington as chief warder in charge of Mount Cook gaol In 1884 he was made gaoler at the- Terrace Prison, and a year later, on the retirement of Micaiah Reid from the Governorship of the gaol ; Mr Garvey succeeded him, and has filled that post ever since, besides carrying out duties of probation officer.
