SYDNEY, July 7.

The City Football Club (Auckland) opened its Australian tour to-day, meeting Newtown at Sydney. The weather was fine and there were about 17,000 spectators present. A. Nicholson, Harris, Frayer, Todd, and Magee stood out of the City team.

Auckland won the toss, and played with a fresh westerly wind. Play was fairly even, for the greater part of the first half, with occasional flashes by the visitors, which took the locals all their time to prevent scoring. The visitors were excellent in forward play, but were deficient in the hack division if Smith be excepted. The latter got in some fine runs. A few minutes' before half time Newtown wena being hard pressed in home territory 5 the Aaicklandi forwards playing dashingly. Plant secured from the pack and darted over. Young converted. In the second spell, Newtown made play willing. Almost immediately after the kick-off they scored off a brilliant run by Russell, who beat the whole of the opposing side. Hay kicked a goal. City 8, Newtown 5. The Aucklanders were now hotly pressed, G. Tyler and Wood twice getting them out of difficulty. After a long period of uninteresting play, Smith gave a, fine exhibition of his speed, for wmchi he was cheered. Luscombe only managed to shove him into touch as a try was imminent.
