OBITUARY.
DEATH OF MRS JOHN HICKS.
A very old identity of this district, in the person of Mxs John Hicks, was t£moved by death this morning. Born in Cornwall, England, in 1820, the deceased lady came to this colony 64 years ago (1842), with the early 6ettlers for New Plymouth. She remained theire for a time, but afterwards went* to the Hutt and next to Wanganui before finally settling in Hawera 30 years ago. The deceased lady had a .heavy part in the troublous times of the pioneers and on account of the native risings had to leave her home on two or thTee occasions. Mrs Hicks, who had a family of 10, was predeceased by her husband by 20 yearns. Nine of the family are still living,, namely, Richard (Wellington) William (Parnell, Auckland), John, Robert and James (Hawera), .Mns 1 C. Jeffcott (Wellington), Mrs F. Old (Sentry Hill), Mrs T. Mason (Epsom, Auckland), and Mrs J. McCarten (HaweTa). Mts Hacks had suffered from a painful malady for the past 18 months, but a couple of months ago became more ©ariously ill, and had to .remain in bed. At hea* advanced age (86) death was not unexpected, but a wide circle of friends will sympathise with the various members of the family in their bereavement. The funeral takes place on Thursday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock at the Hawera Cemetiry.
[PKBSS ASSOCIATION.] DUNEDIN, April 24. Charles Delongville Graham, shipping reporter at Port Chalmers for 26 years, and a prominent Freemason, died this morning.
INVERCARGILL, April 24. The death is announced of an old Southlander, Mr John McChesney, 91 years of age. He was one of the British legion who fought under Sir Delacy Evans with, the British legion in the> Cartist War, ■and wa6 the last living of 20 survivors.
