GOVERNMENT GOES INTO THE COAL BUSINESS.

The Government lias taken over, on lease, the premises of the Westport Coal Company at Wellington, as a going concern; tlhat is, the State becomes the owner <A the coal yards, working plant and distributing equipment, and enters into business as a retailer of the State Mine coal, which, will be delivered at 28<> per ton, 14s 6d per half ton, 7s 6d for quarter ton, and* Is 6d per hundredweight.

Mr James Mills, managing director of the Union SS. Company, was entertained at luncheon to-day, on the eve of his departure for England. In replying to the toast of his 'health, Mar Mills said part of his mission to the Old Country was to arrange for the building of new steamers. One would be a turbine steamer, to run between Wellington and Lyttelton.. This steamer, wnich would be of about 3000 tons and have a working speed of 18 knots, would replace the Rotomahana.
