SWIMMING CLUB.

SOCIAL AND PRIZE PRESENTATION. The annual social and presentation of prizes of the Hawera Swimming Club wa*, held on Tuesday night in the Oddfellows' Hall. There were about 40 present, the President of the Club (Mr Robbins) being in the chair. A very fine "spread" was provided, Mr J. P. Keen bping the caterer. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Rev. Jacob and Mr J. Brunette, Vice-Presidents. After the toast of "The King," The Chairman proposed "The Amateur Swimming Association of New Zealand." He believed in the cleanliness of amateur ''Swimming. He mentioned that amateur contests were to take place at the International Exhibition, at which he hoped the Hawera Club would be represented. Mr Little, in. responding, pointed out the benefits of belonging to the Association, and showed that it was owing to the club being tflius associated that the members trained as they did for races. The Oaptain s of the Club (Mr A. Kean) i proposed "Sister Clubs." H© had had opportunities of ta-sitdng tihe hospitality of other clubs, and especially mentioned the | treatment received at the hands of tihe New Plymouth Club on t!he occasion of the 1 recent West Coast championship meeting. Mr Dale, as a member of the Wanganni Olub, thanked Mr Kean for has kind remarks. Mr Stevens, Vice-President, asked the company to drink to the health and continued prosperity of "The Mayor and Borough Councillors," to whom the town to a great extent owed the public baths. The actual physical benefit from such an institution! could hardly be over-estimat-ed. The effect of a cold bath in the morning was beneficial, as he could per tonally testify. The Mayor (Mr Bobbins), in responding, said that a number of people weone wont to croak abon.t the baths being ahead of the town. They had not been a financial success, and this year's balancesheet showed a deficit for them, but their benefits could not be reckoned by £ 6. d. "The Prize Winners" was then proposed by Mr Biltcliffe, wiio said that- the winners liad his congratulations and the losers bis sympathy. •» The prize winners then replied in turn. A very popular toast was "The Caretaker." proposed by the President, who thought that there was no better man in the town for the position, and that much of the success of the club was due to him. Mr Parkin, oe custodian, had given the

greatest satisfaction to Ihe Borough Council. Mr Parkin, who was heartily applauded on rising to return thanks, said that nothing gave liim greater pleasure than to have his services appreciated by the members of the Hawera Swimming Club. Mr Dale said that in regard to sending a polo team to Chri&tchurch. it was proposed to send a combined team from the coast. "The Hawera Swimming Club" was proposed by Mr Hooker. The Secaietary (Mr Warcup), in. replying, said that in his position he had a lot of work to do, but his committee helped him loyally. He announced that a prominent jeweller of the town had that day promised to donate a medal for a life-saving competition among the senior members. Mr Stevens proposed "The Press," and the Star representative present- responded. Tlie following items were contributed during the evening: — Piano solo. Mr Xowell; song, "The Bugler," Mr Eady; song, "Asleep in th© Deep," Mr Cameron ; song, "The Better Land," Mr Schwartz; recitation, "Bay Billy," Mr Sargeson ; song, "I've had a good day to^ay," Mr Biltcliffe (encored); song, "Tlhe Skipper." Mr Jlooker (encored) ; banjo solo. Air Reid; recitation, Mr Turnbull (encored) ; song, "A little bit further down-," Mr Bilteliffe (-encored). Air Schwartz was the accompanist. Votes of thanks were accorded the caterer (Mr Keen), the accompanist (Mi Schwartz), and the President of the meeting (Mr Robbins). "Auld Lang Syne" brought to a close amost enjoyable evening.
