NORMANBY ROAD DISPUTE.

DIFFERENCE ABOUT AGREEMENT SETTLED.

As a result of a conference between representatives of the County Council and the Normanby Town Board an agreement was arrived at in connection with the dispute concerning the maintenance of the j county road through Normanby. In J drafting the agreement subsequently a clause (6) was added, the full text of | which has already been reported. At Saturday's meeting of the Hawera Council it was reported that the agreement had been signed by the Councu representatives, and by Mr Clarke, on behalf of the Normanby Town Board, but the other two Board representatives, who objected to clause 6, declined to sign it. Mr Rowe, Chairman of the Board, wrote saying that clauses 1 to 5 included the substance of what was agreed upon, and he could not accept clause 6 without first consulting the Board. I A later letter from the Board officially supported the view taken by the Chairman, and said if clause 6 were deleted, the Board would fall in with the agreement. Cr McLean said the Board was taking umbrage quite unnecessarily. The sixth clause was merely a resume of the poßition, and for the purpose of placing the understanding beyond doubt. He thought, however, that clause 5 fully met the position without the explanation contained in clause 6, and as its removal would satisfy the Normanby Town Board it should be deleted. Cr Marx agreed with Cr McLean. Cr Stewart said he took the same view of the clause as* the Board, and in his opinion clause 6 threw the responsibility upon the Board. Cr. Winks thought it necessary that clause 6 should be left in. The object of the conference was to arrive at an agreement that would quash the ruling of Mr Short, and that was brought about by clause 6. Cr Stewart said clause 6 killed clause 5. Cr Wilkie thought clause 6 could be left out wiuiout in the least interfering with the agreement. He would not go to the extent of binding the Council to provide funds without the Council having jurisdiction over the roads. It was decided to delete clause 6, on the motion of Cr Stewart-, seconded by Cr Marx.
