WEST COAST NATIVE RESERVES.

THE x'UBjJC TRUSTEE IN REPKi

[PRESS ASSOCIATION.] WELLINGTON, October 1 The Public Trustee replies through i | press to statements in the House of lv presentatives on Thursday regarding t, administration of the West Coast ■ Reserves. Regarding the statement tit i orders were given on the Trustee fir £1200 for a drunken tangi, the Trustee says he caanct accept such orders, il is incorrect to say that natives are plao.l on inadequate areas, the fact being thai many of the holdings are too large, with the result that the lands are neglected or surreptitiously leased to Europeans. There is plenty of land for all natives. With respect to Mr Kaihau's allegation that highior rents would be obtained by natives, the Trustee says this is obviously incorrect. The present system is much simpler tnan getting a lease from numerous owners in a grant and afterwards distributing the rents. Most of the present leases were granted ten years ago, and cannot be altered till revaluation. The Trustee concludes that the great majority of Taranaki natives are quite con- . tent with the present condition of things. I — — ===== i Mr D. Sullivan, who has purchased the lease of the Eginont Hotel, has an advertisement in this- issue. Six-roomed house for sale or to let. C.
