SPEECHES AT MANUFACTURERS 1 DINNER.
[press association.] (Received October 1, 9.31 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 1.
Speaking at the Chamber of Manufac burers' dinner, bh© Minister for Home Affairs said it was thought at the last elections that the fiscal question was settle*, but Australia was threatened with the nationalisation of industries. The subject represented too great a question to be laiil aside, and there must be a division of parties thereon. Mr Watson said there was a great idf a that thd Labor party , was opposed u> manufacturers and employers. That was not so. I wished manufacturers every success, but labor was opposed to mono?oly. As to the gladiatorial contest the linister had referred to, he believed tlie Federal Government was "sicklied o'er with the pallid hue of death." He premised to give them a decent burial. As to cause for reopening the tariff there was a number of industries suffering from intense injury on account thereof. With regard to preference, he declared the issue was put clearly before the people of Australia, and their verdict was certainly in favor of entering into an arrangement with tire Mother Country. The sympathy of the community must go out to the captains .of industry < with whom he was surrounded that night.
