MR JOHN McGOWAN, VALUERUBNERAL.
In the House of Ropresentafcfovs yesterday afternoon Sir Joseph Wajd. announced Iho sudden death of Mr Jot* McGowan, Commissioner ot Taxen «ud Valuer-Gen-erul, and iv doing so the Minister expressed regret at the Wes. of so valuable and highly trusted. »U officer of the public service.
The la.t« Mr, John McGowan was, a saembor of the Public Trust, Government Insurance, Land Purchase, Advances to Settlers, aud Post and Telegraph Appeal ! Boards, and Valuer-Genera). , Entering the service in, 1867, Mr McGowan's exceptional ability and untiring industry catcied him, in the course-, of six yew, into the position of first, clerk in the Paymastet-GentraFs branchof tho Treasury. His services were secured for the Property Tax Department at v«m institution; in. 1880. He waa selected by Sir Harry Atkinson for the chief «krkship when Mr Spery died and Mr Crombio was raised to the Committfenerahipv Mr McGowan being appointed DeputyCommissioner. In 1894, Mr Crombie followed his ,late chief, auwt Mr McGowan became Commieioner oi Taxes. In 1874 Mr McG»wan married Stater* third daughter. «f the late Rev. Robert, Ward, for fft»uy years well-known m New Plymouth as the minister of the Primitive, Methodist Church.
