CRICKET.

ENGLISHMEN IN AUSTRALIA.

THE SECOND TEST MATCH.

WON BY ENGLAND.

(By Telegraphs—Copyright.) Received 5, 9.32 p.m. MELBOURNE, January 5. Wretched weather, with showers' all night and during the morning until noon, so soddened the wicket that it was little better than a quagmire. Fortunately at noon the sun broke through the dense clouds and dried the pitch sufficiently to start play at 3.10 pan. Warner superintended the rolling of the wicket, or, rather, the mud, which caked on the roller.' *A considerable quantity of sa,iv. dust was provided for bowlers and bats men. The attendance numbered close on 10v000 during the afternoon, Trumble, bowling with the wind; took Knight with his second ball leg before. Trumble stuck up Lilley, who was stump ed by Kelly. The first run' of the day was a leg bye. Tyldesley then opened out, but the field was very dead. Th«Lancashire man scored- repeatedly off botl: bowlers, but eventually he fell to an easy catch by Trumble with the score at 90. He played a great innings, and hit two fives and six fours in 78 minutes.

The others were (juickly disposed of. the Australians' fielding being superb. Requiring §97 to win, the Australians started their second innings. Shortly .itterwar'ds Duff was easily caught in' ths slips. Hill scored rapidly off Rhodes, making 10 in one over; but was misled when he had eight up. Afterwards he profited by the let-off, as he hit two fours and one two off successive balls from Rhodes. With the score at 40 Braund badly missed a catch from Trumper off Hirst. Then Relf took one over to allow Hirst and Rhodes to change ends, which proved effective, as Hill- hit Rhodes to long-on, the ball being held by Relf. Noble, was. the Only other batsman to trouble the Englishmen. He scored 31. though he was badly missed by Tyldesley at long-on when he had made 5. Rhodes' bowling was terribly destruc tive, and if the Englishmen had taker, all the chances offered there would hav-.-been a marvellous analysis. Tyldesley and Rhodes, by their batting and bow) ing, won the match. Scores were as appended: — Englishmen^ firs ( t innings 315 Second Innings.
