HORRIBLE ACCIDENT FROM BURNING.
Per Press Association. WANGANUI, December 13. An old man had a narrow escape from being burned to death yestectlay. While in a state of intoxication he went to sleep under some trei-s in Queen's Avenue where the grass <augl»t fire from the ashes of his pipo. AM en awakened by the flames his nellies were on fire and he made for a M>re fence close by, but fell into a ditch in which a, quantity of dry leaves had accumulated and were soon burning fiercely. Scrambling out he attempted to get through the wires but could not and would have been burned to death had not a resident observed his stiugglcs and gone to his rescue. Ho was taken to the hospital.
This evening a committee from the Hawera ITospital Board will go to New Plymouth to meet a committee from the New Plymouth Board, when the question of finance and other matters will be discussed.
