The chairman of the Wellington Education Board considers that recent legislation has reduced the Board's functions to a skeleton control, but that it is apparently futile to protest. The Premier left on Wednesdayfor Gisborne, where he attends a large native gathering. A beginning has been made with laying the roil beams on the Makohine viaduct. In about a month's time the whole structure is expected to be completed. The Telegraph Department is advised that the Norfolk Island-New Zealand section of the Pacific Cable was completed this afternoon. At to-day's meeting of the Education Board, a discussion took place concerning the position of the Board with regard to building grants. The Board's income is £5600, wherewith to provide for office salaries, teachers' expenses, new schools, scholarships, stationery, and other things. The Chairman said the Board had an overdraft from former years which could only be wiped out by sacrificing the best interests of education. However, he would not let the overdraft go further, as he would refuse to sign cheques. The Board has given its sewing teachers notices of dismissal, in compliance with the Department's circular, but considers wrong is being inflicted on the com* munity by this step.

The Christchurch Hospital Board has expressed the opinion that it is advisable that all future post mortem examinations at the hospital should be made by medical men not connected with the hospital staff. The Education Board has received applications from 23 female teaohers desirous of taking up work in the refugee camps in South Africa. The applications have been forwarded to Wellington.
